Tian'anmen Square. It is 880 meters long from south to north, 500 meters wide from east to west. The whole square occupies an area of 44 hectares, big enough to hold one million people. It is the biggest city center square in the world. Since the founding of New China in 1949, large-scale renovations were done several times. In 1950's. the surrounding wall of the T-shaped square had been pulled down. Several huge projects were set up around the square. In 1999, before the eve of the 50th anniversary of the founding of People's Republic of China, Tian'anmen Square was renovated again. 280,000 pieces of light pink granite replaced the original cement bricks; 9,600 square meters of lawn was added on the east and west sides of the square to symbolize the whole territory of China. The street in front of Tian'anmen gate tower is the Chang'an Avenue. It extends from Tongzhou District in the east to Shijingshan District in the west. It is 70 meters wide in average, the maximum width is 100 meters and the total length of the avenue is 46 kilometers.
